Security fencing: characteristics, regulations, opportunities

Security fencing plays a fundamental role in situations where the protection of areas and people are a priority, for example, sporting or industrial facilities, airports, motorways, and warehouses. We have therefore decided to offer more detailed information of Cavatorta products designed for use in these contexts.

CHARACTERISTICS OF INTRUDER-PROOF SECURITY FENCING

To guarantee maximum protection, security fencing must respect a few fundamental requirements, namely:

  • Tight meshing
A densely woven mesh does not offer any support points, and therefore discourages any attempts at intrusion.
  • Robust wires
The diameter of the wire is greater than that of standard wire, allowing it to offer high resistance to cutting and additional mechanical stress.
  • Resistance to corrosion
The composition and coating of the wire mesh have been designed to offer resistance to corrosion and atmospheric conditions, guaranteeing consistant performance over time.

AREAS OF USE

Security fencing is used in environments intended for various activities. For each area of use, a few specific characteristics are required. Here are a few examples:

Sports fences

This type of fencing aims primarily to protect spectators and offer maximum protection against the risk of falling, rolling, and slipping. Sports fencing must also comply with specific national regulations and indications stipulated by federations and sports committees.

Construction site fencing

This type of fencing is designed to prevent unauthorised individuals from accessing the works, as well as suitably signalling and protection the construction site. Different types of construction site require different fencing models, selected above all on the basis of the kind of works being carried out and the immediate context of the construction site itself. You can find out more about this topic by reading our article: Construction site fencing: models and opportunities.

Fencing intended for use in industrial areas or areas offering restricted access to authorised individuals only

This type of fencing is designed to mark out a working area in which production facilities and different types of machinery are in operation, to offer protection from the accidental falling of dangerous material and to mark out a zone that is accessible to authorised personnel only.

SECURITY FENCING BY CAVATORTA

Cavatorta offers two innovative solutions for security fencing: High-security fencing and HSF Activa™. We will describe both of these briefly below.

High-security fencing

High-security electro-welded mesh made with zinc-aluminium alloy wire, featuring a diameter of 4mm, both vertically and horizontally. The exclusive Galvatec process used for the coating provides excellent resistance against corrosion and cathodic protection against cuts and abrasions.

Our High-security fencing was designed especially with the aim of preventing and hindering any kind of intrusion. The quality of the material, the dense weave of the mesh, and the diameter of the wire (which is higher than that of standard wire) guarantee total security, eliminating any possibility of gaining a hand or foot hold or the use of cutters.

An excellent illustration of the level of security offered by high-security fencing is the fact that it was used to construct a perimeter around the EXPO 2015 exhibition area.

HSF Activa™

High security electro-welded mesh panels, produced using 4.00 mm (8 ga.) Galvatec® coated wires (Alu-Zinc alloy). The small 76.2 x 12.7 mm meshes as well as its resistance create a safety barrier against climbing, not allowing any support to feet or hands. Not even wire cutters can be used as there is not enough space between the meshes.

The heart of HSF Activa™ is a sophisticated system for detecting the points of attack (detection accuracy of +/- 2.5 m) which, compared to traditional fence systems, is completely hidden and tamper-proof.
