The fencing of vineyards and orchards: a guide to what’s available

In recent years there has been an increasing number of wild animals, whose presence has intensified particularly in cultivated areas adjacent to woods. Rapid urbanisation and a shortage of predators have favoured the repopulation of wild species and in particular ungulate animals. Red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and wild boars cause a great deal of damage to crops, forcing growers to pay a great deal of money for crop protection.

It is therefore essential to provide the land with metal fences that protect vineyards and orchards from incursions by wild animals while respecting their safety.

FEATURES OF THE IDEAL FENCING FOR VINEYARDS AND ORCHARDS

In order to ensure adequate protection of vineyards and orchards and to choose the best type of fence, it is necessary to take into account certain factors:

  • the type and size of animals likely to threaten crops;
  • the soil characteristics of the area to be fenced.

The first point determines the number of wires that will make up the fence and the distance between them: the smaller the animal (as for example in the case of wild boar) the denser the wires will have to be in the lower part of the fence. The taller the animal and the more able to jump (such as roe deer) the higher the fence needs to be. Despite these precautions, animals can still cross the fence, identifying the points of greatest vulnerability. In these cases it is advisable to reinforce the weak portions of the fence by reducing the distance between the wires.

It is also important to know that fencing effective and durable over time requires the use of quality materials that are resistant to atmosphere, corrosion and wear. In addition, the characteristics of the ground must also be taken into account in order to identify the most suitable installation methods and the poles necessary to obtain a solid and durable fence. Specifically, if the soil is robust and compact it can be used as a base for the installation of the posts, but otherwise wire anchors should be used. THE FENCING OF VINEYARDS AND ORCHARDS ACCORDING TO CAVATORTA

Our catalogue offers metallic mesh designed for orchards and vineyards as well as dedicated installation and assembly systems. Below are some of them with their particular features.

Nodagri

Knotted fencing with differentiated meshs. The vertical (linear) and horizontal (crimped) steel wires are hot dipped galvanized.

Nodafort

Knotted fencing with differentiated mesh. The vertical (cross) and horizontal (line) wires of the mesh are made in zinc coated steel obtained through the exclusive Galvafort Process created by Cavatorta giving a longer life than Nodagri.

Nodatec

Knotted fencing with differentiated meshs. The straight vertical and the crimped horizontal steel wires present an average elongation of less than 10% and are coated with a zinc-alluminium alloy, giving a longer life than Nodaagri and Nodafort.

Agrisald

Electro-welded mesh produced with rectangular or square meshes. The vertical and horizontal wires are both straight and hot dipped galvanized.
